I'm pretty sure Slaves and Prostitutes don't care about Chipped Nails Either...

These are 5-day nails. FIVE. FUCKING. DAYS. I can't with my work schedule right now; I didn't even have time to put a top coat on them or the energy to do a decent job on my right hand (it looks like a 5 year old did it-you know it does...). The only reason I have time to post right now is because this is one of two days I have off this week...most of the time I spend the entire day into part of the morning at work. This is all extremely temporary, but I'm still going to bitch anyway...

I've decided waitressing is literally a cross between prostitution and slavery. The basic economics are practically identical: it's mainly female staff serving mostly male patronage who pay you based on how much you appeal to their-ahem-ego and if you don't make any tips, you are in fact working for nothing (the opportunity cost and expenses of travel basically cancel out your daily base wage). Not to mention going about 10 to 12 hours on your feet 99 percent of the time with very little to eat or drink. So yeah, take one of the oldest occupations and one of the most atrocious occupations in the entire world, mash them together and you basically get waitressing.  Not everywhere is as bad as where I work additionally, such short run economics only apply to individuals trying to get out of Broke-Ass-ville.

It's not like I'm being forced to put up with any of it though; none of these girls are, which is why the turnover at the place is absurd. I watched one girl straight up walk off the job in the middle of her shift; the management didn't even bat an eyelash. At least when I put in my two weeks at McDonald's a few years back, the manager sat me down and made sure I wasn't leaving because I got raped in the back dock or whatever (he wasn't actually concerned, he just didn't want to get sued).

The bottom line is that I hate any profession that is overly dependent on the compassion of other human beings. Regular people really aren't that nice most of the time; it's not that they're callous or insensitive, but they simply don't feel obligated to care that much if you don't give them a really good reason to and I work here because I suck at life is simply not a good enough reason.

I did get a $20 bill as a tip one time though. At least it wasn't a bunch of singles...that would bring me into stripper territory.

  3. I think these nails are cute Ezi! Beside my real job, I am waitressing as well. I have worked at places like the one you described, but the place I am working at now is a lot of fun. Guess I can call myself lucky... I wouldn't do it if it sucked -I'm too old for this...

    Feel better soon dear!
